Google and Facebook allegedly plotting to monopolize the online advertising market
Court documents in the United States reveal that Google and Facebook officials were directly involved in agreeing an allegedly illegal deal in 2018 to strengthen their dominance in the online advertising market.
The document was contained as part of an antitrust lawsuit from the coalition of US states targeting Google. The document is a serious charge for Google, the tech giant that has long been accused of monopolistic practices. The coalition of states in the US believes the online search company is trying to monopolize competition by manipulating ad auctions. It includes an ultra-sophisticated system that determines which advertisements appear on web pages based on the anonymous profiles of internet users. The legal documents filed in a New York court clearly refer to two top executives of Google and Facebook, namely Alphabet's Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Facebook's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "Google CEO Sundar Pichai also personally signed the terms of the deal," the lawsuit said. Google categorically denies manipulating the digital ad market. The company's management referred to a 2021 blog post in which it vowed to defend itself in court against a lawsuit it said was "misleading" and without "credible grounds". A company spokesman further denied that Pichai had personally signed such a deal.
